At Camp Sequoia, we run a warm, structured overnight summer camp where kids with ADHD can enjoy being themselves. Our programs are built for boys and girls ages 8-18 who are bright, capable, and creative, but who need a camp environment that understands attention, regulation, and the social learning curve that often comes with ADHD.
Although our campus is in Pennsburg, Pennsylvania, we welcome campers from across the country. New York families are a big part of our community. We have campers from New York City and Long Island to Westchester, the Hudson Valley, and upstate. We have key staff based in New York, and enjoy home visits as part of our intake process as time and geography allow.
We designed Camp Sequoia for kids who don’t need the intensity of a highly clinical special-needs camp, but who also don’t thrive in a ‘sink or swim’ traditional program. We pair a classic camp experience with intentionally geared activities. This caters our program to the interest profile of our kids while supporting our campers’ independence, friendship , and frustration tolerance skills in real time.
Our approach is research-informed and strength-based. If you’d like to dig into the philosophy behind the program, start with our Mission & Approach and Who We Serve. Many of our campers are also twice-exceptional (2e). We equip our staff to support kids who can be advanced academically while still needing support with organization, flexibility, or social nuance.
Life at camp is active, but not chaotic. Predictable routines, clear expectations, and a high staff-to-camper ratio (2:5) help campers feel steady enough to take social risks. This includes trying a new activity, joining a group game, or practicing repair after a misunderstanding with a peer under the guidance of a well-trained and compassionate staff.
Our physical setting helps immensely. Campers enjoy a beautiful campus with multiple gyms, basketball, and tennis courts. Our art spaces filled with natural light, and we have a competition-sized pool. Additionally, we have an 800-acre lake for fishing, boating, and outdoor skill-building. From STEM to Archery to Drones and D&D, there are over 75 unique activities for our campers. Rather than a dozen (or more) kids bunked in a cabin in the woods, our campers enjoy semi-private climate-controlled spaces. They also have lounge space for their age group and staff embedded and present to support social growth in an authentic way.
New York kids often arrive with both enthusiasm and some trepidation of the unknown. At Sequoia, we slow the social world down just enough that campers can learn what works, keep what works, and bring those wins home.
Distance is rarely the problem families fear it will be. We are just a couple hours from Manhattan and have a camp bus leaving from Secaucus. The first few days can include the usual ‘I miss home’ feelings, but our team is skilled at helping campers settle in. With support, connecting with cabinmates and find their rhythm happens naturally. You can learn more about Our Team and see how we prioritize community well-being in our COVID-free Summer 2020 story
